Project details
Connection of the energy sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina with the corresponding
sectors in the neighboring and the European Union countries, and joining the regional
and European markets (not only in electrical energy sector) could give a good chance
to its development. Hydropower – 84 % of renewable electricity and 13% of world
production. 1 kWh ~ 1.3 kg of brown coal ~ 0.25 kg of crude oil ~ 0.48 kg CO2
Definition of small hydro power (SHP) - <10 MW (EU), vary, in B&H 5 MW (due
to law on purchase of energy from RES of installed capacity < 5 MW). SHP is:l:
- sustainable resource
- efficient resource
- secure resource
- clean and renewable resource
Environmental and legal issues Impacts in the construction phase (reservoirs, water
intakes, chanells, penstocks, tailraces...) Impacts during operation (biological,
sonic, visual) Methods to mitigate these impacts developed.
Legal procedure:
Town planning aproval
Construction permit
Permit for use
Advantages of SHP over other RES
high efficiency (70 - 90%),
capacity factor (typically >50%),
good predictability,
slow rate of change, g
ood correlation with demand,
long-lasting and robust technology,
environmentally benign technology
Obstacles of SHP utilization:
site-specific technology,
level of expansion limited,
seasonal flow variation,
lack of familiarity with the technology
